9 April

Saturday 7 April
Today it was the Medieval faire in Monforte de Lemos. People were dressed up in traditional clothes and again there was lots of local produce on sale in the old pedestrian streets which lead up to the fort at the top of the hill.

Friday 6 April
We were invited to eat with our friends Katy and Ted who showed us where we could buy milk straight from the cows at a local farm in a small village called Mer. It is a small dairy herd of 20 Fresian cows. They also have a herd of red Galician cows for meat. They invited us in to see the whole process and explained that the cows are kept in at night but are out at pasture during the day.

We then accompanied Ted and Katy to visit family down in the Canyon de Sil. It was almost at river level at the change in climate was really notable. This is where a lot of people own vines on the south side of the canyon. The family we visited had renovated an old barn where the vine workers would eat. They had cactus plants along the garden walls, which stay out all year long.

Ferria de los vinos – It was the fiesta of the wines in Sober. It was good to see the amount of regional and local produce: breads, cakes, wines, pottery, honey and sweets. The music was very celtic with bagpipes and drums and very energetic dancing.

The Journey Begins

In actual fact the journey began some time ago. The Design course has reinforced decisions that had already been made and given me the tools to put together some sort of plan to make that first step a little less daunting. I returned from the two week course today and although extremely tired I have been so motivated not just by the course, but by the people I had the good fortune to meet, that I have created this blog. I owe a great deal of thanks to those people, for their inspiration, support and a great deal of laughter. I'm not sure what the outcomes will be, but I am sure it will be an interesting journey and welcome you to join me.
